The Grand Stand View

There can be no hiding the disappointment at Stars’ 11th place finish from last season, a football club that has worked incredibly hard to be where they are today, Platinum Stars have the resources and pedigree to always be a top 8 finishing side that regularly pushes the bigger teams all the way to the wire. The fact that such a well assembled squad can only manage a measly 8 wins in a league season is startling to say the least, there now needs to be a high degree of stability in the coaching department and on the playing roster if Stars are to earn back their rightful place in the top 8 during this campaign.

The reappointment of gaffer Cavin Johnson is reassuring, the man knows football in Mzansi like the back of his notepad and he is one of few coaches in our local fraternity that doesn’t shy away from handing a talented young player a first team berth when he can or should; Stars will need to put the cheque book away for a while and return to the fundamental ideals that made them into the football institution they are today. Hard work and faith have always seemed to go hand-in-hand with talent over at Royal Bafokeng, yet there seems to be a lack of confidence and surety within that dressing room at the moment and that could be a result of the instability within the club as a whole now that the incredible results are coming fewer and further between. Cavin Johnson is a pragmatic man-manager that will know how to set realistic targets for the team while motivating them to exceed their overall potential as a side, his Midas touch could be just what the doctor ordered for a team that should finish in the top 8 and challenge for places against the more illustrious teams higher up on the totem pole.
