The Grand Stand View

Recovering from the departure of their charismatic gaffer after he led them to their best ever league finish, 8th place, was always going to be a tough ask for The Team of Choice; the continuity provided by new minder Mandla Ncikazi can only be as effective as the personnel he has at his disposal. The Maritzburg United roster may boast some of the lesser illustrious names in the Mzansi football realm, yet that has never stopped the side from punching above their weight in the past; the fact that they can field a competitive side on any given match day, despite having one of the lower squad age averages in the league, is a testament to the great work done by the management in Pietermaritzburg.

New players will always need time to acclimatise to a new club regardless of how experienced they may be, that same acclimatisation process can be drastically altered when most of the squad is still adjusting to the new man at the helm of the squad; The Team of Choice have done well to ensure that the changes at the club do not destabilise the progress they made last season and stunt their development as a football institution. Adding new players to the roster is bound to be a tricky assignment for a new and relatively inexperienced gaffer, as he has less rapport with the players he may be looking to bring to the squad due to his philosophy and management style still appearing to be vague to most at the start; the opportunity to work with lesser heralded and hungrier players may afford the new gaffer a perfect platform to build a name for himself and his club upon. One thing is for certain, Maritzburg United have proven that they know how to play the market wisely, picking feasible deals that add quality to their side while ensuring that they maintain a great level of professionalism and ambition within the squad.
